Description
Half-length portrait of Karthaus attired in a white collared shirt, waistcoat, and bowtie and a black jacket. He sits in a wooden chair and faces slightly right while his eyes look left. Below the portrait is a vignette of a landscape with trees and ships on the water in the background. Peter Arnold Karthaus (1765-1840) immigrated to the United States from Hamburg, Germany in 1796 and established a mercantile business in the West Branch of the Susquehanna River Valley.
