Description
View looking from Philadelphia toward Windmill Island in the Delaware River. In the foreground, the edges of piers are visible. Sailboats and a steamboat traverse the river. The island, including a building and several trees (left), and the cityscape of Camden (right) comprise the background. In 1838 a channel was cut through Windmill Island in the Delaware River to improve navigation between Philadelphia and Camden, New Jersey. Smith Island to the north and Windmill Island to the south served as summer resort areas. Removal of the islands to allow unobstructed navigation of the river was completed in 1897.
