Description Watercolor of the front façade of the Pennsylvania Company for Insurances on Lives and Granting Annuities’ office building constructed in 1859 at 304 Walnut Street, Philadelphia. Shows the two-story building with a sign above the front entrance that reads, “304.” Signs in windows to the left and right of the entrance advertise the Company’s name. Two men stand on the front steps and converse, and several pedestrians walk on the sidewalk. Also shows partial views of adjacent buildings. The Pennsylvania Company for Insurances on Lives and Granting Annuities was founded in 1812. In 1872, it was renamed as the Pennsylvania Company for Banking and Trust. The firm merged with the Bank of North America and Trust Company in 1929. The Company occupied the building at 304 Walnut Street, Philadelphia from 1859 to 1873.

Biographical / historical note George Emerick Essig (1838-1923), a Philadelphia-born painter, watercolorist, and etcher, specialized in marine scenes, particularly of the New Jersey coast. He exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1876 to 1888.
