Arcadia caption text: The first of several major public edifices built in the Greek Revival style in the early 19th century, the Bank of Pennsylvania greatly influenced bank design in Philadelphia and other American cities and contributed to Philadelphia’s designation as the “Athens of America.” Designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the bank contained the first domed banking room in America. The dome motif was echoed in the small pavilions located at each of the four corners of the lot, three of which housed the bank’s guards while the fourth served as an outhouse.
