Creator
Taylor, Frank H. (Frank Hamilton), 1846-1927
Title
Old Wooden-Sides Gone at Last
Date
ca. 1914
Notes
Shows a row of wooden residences on a cobblestone street slated for demolition.
When, in 1796, the city fathers decreed that no more wooden houses should be erected in the built-up sections of the city, they began to multiply upon the commons. These weather-beaten survivors of the march of improvement, escaping conflagration, stood upon Cherry street, north side, west from Thirteenth street, until 1914, when they were removed together with the adjoining brick structures to clear space for a factory and store building.
