In the central foreground, a female slave is purchased by a European planter (left), who completes the transaction by giving a sack of coins to a slave merchant. Chained and shackled, the slave leans over and covers her face in despair. Behind her, several Europeans congregate in the tropical landscape. A vessel, presumably a slave-ship, is docked in the background.
