Description
Set in a lush, tropical landscape on the island of St. Vincent, the image shows a "Negro festival." In the center of the scene, an attractive couple performs a dance to the music of a tamborine and a drum, played by the girl and boy to the left. Although the dancers are barefoot, they are both well-dressed: she wears a low-collared dress that sets off a beaded necklace, and he wears a wig. Next to them, a light-skinned (possibly mulatto) couple appear in similar costume. The man's gesture suggests that he is inviting his partner to dance. In the right foreground, a more humbly dressed woman bends over to lay plates holding grapes, berries, a pineapple, and other fruits on the ground. In the right background, other well-dressed women sit at a table and are waited on by a girl.
