Description
Engraving shows several Africans being led from Senegal's interior to the coast, where they will be sold into slavery. Three Africans in the foreground wear forked branches around their necks. Such branches were commonly used in the African slave-trade, and appear frequently in depictions thereof. The branches were secured in back by an iron rod, which threatened to choke the wearer if he or she struggled or tried to escape.
