Outdoors on the island of Martinique, a well-dressed Creole couple is waited on by a black male slave who carries a serving tray upon which rests a bottle and small drinking vessel. The woman sits stiffly in a chair; a book rests upon her lap. The man stands next to a tree and holds one of its branches.
