Description Glass negative showing Sunset Lake interspersed with various islands at Asbury Park, N.J. A canoe holding a group of people is moored at the central island. Asbury Park was developed in 1871 as a residential resort by James A. Bradley (1830-1921), a New York brush manufacturer. The town was named for Francis Asbury (1745-1816), the first American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was once home to the famous indoor amusement park Palace Amusements, the site of the original Tillie mural depicting two grinning faces.
