Description
Glass negative showing Mary Emlen, Anne Emlen, and Marriott C. Morris' sister Elizabeth Canby Morris gathered on the beach on Ocean Day. Two horse-drawn buggys and a flagpole stand behind the women. To the right a man wearing a bowler hat with his back turned to the camera walks away. The women wear long dark dresses and hats. Jersey Wash Day, also known as Salt Water Day or Ocean Day, was an annual event held the second Saturday of August near Wreck Pond in Sea Girt. Farmers living twenty to thirty miles from Sea Girt came to the sea to spend a day bathing and celebrating. The tradition, begun before 1853, stopped around the 1930s.
