Description
Glass negative showing a view of a the Friends' Library behind a cemetery surrounded by a low metal fence and a stone wall as seen from the roof of 4739-4745 Main Street, later Germantown Avenue. The Library stands on the right side of the cemetery and the gymnasium and primary school of the Germantown Friends School are visible in the backgorund. The Friends Free Library was originally housed in the Germantown Friends School, starting in 1845. In 1874, a separate library building was built, endowed by Alfred Cope. The Friends Free Library was an independent organization until 1977 when it was taken over by the school. The Germantown Friends School under the administration of Charles Jones began as a boy’s school in 1845. After closing briefly in 1849, the school reopened with a new building in 1858 and began enrolling girls. In 1869, a new larger school house was built to accommodate more students. This building went through many renovations and enlargements through the 20th century.
