Title
Some's Sound looking out to sea. From half way up Robinsons Mt. [Mount Desert Island, ME] [graphic].
Publisher
PA. Philadelphia. 1888
Date
July 17, 1888
Physical Description
1 photograph: glass negative; 4 x 5 in.
Description
Glass negative showing in the foreground Morris Leeds (Haverford College class of 1888), Sallie Carter, George Williams, Alice Calley, Abram Francis Huston (class of 1872), and Marriott Morris' second cousin once removed Anna Tatnall resting on a high cliff looking out over Somes Sound at Mount Desert Island. Other hills rise along the shoreline, forming an inlet in the distance. Alice Calley married Huston in 1889. Mount Desert Island, the largest island off the coast of Maine, was popularized in the mid-19th century by Hudson River School painters as a nature retreat. From the late 19th century to around the 1930s the Island was a tourist destination for the social elite.
