View looking from the west bank of the Schuylkill River showing the Wire Suspension Bridge. The bridge, the first suspension
bridge in the United States, built 1841-1842 after the designs of engineer Charles Ellet, Jr was erected near the Fairmount
Waterworks to replace Wernwag's Upper Ferry Bridge (burned 1838). It was removed in 1874 and replaced by the Callowhill Street
Bridge. Also shows the hotel and/or railway depot at the foot of the bridge on the east bank.
