Description
Half-length portrait of the physician and abolitionist, attired in a white shirt, a waistcoat, and a jacket with spectacles perched on his forehead, facing left. Atlee was a prominent Philadelphia physician and author who was active in the abolition movement.

Biographical / historical note
Albert Newsam (1809-1864) was a respected deaf and non verbal Philadelphia engraver and lithographer who studied under Peter S. Duval. He received early art training at the Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb.
