Pictorial envelope containing pictorial imagery and advertising on the recto and verso. Imagery on recto shows a lion leaning over the top of a rolled out scroll on which a cup of coffee rests. Vignettes on the verso depict 100 and 50 pound cabinets for shipping "bulk Roasted Coffee" adorned with signage reading "Drink Woolson Spice Co.'s Roasted Coffee." World War One
Shows the memorial, sculpted by J. Otto Schweizer and erected by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1934 in memory of all African American military men who have served in wartime. The top of the monument is a sculpted eternal flame, the "Torch of Life," surrounded by four American eagles. Below the torch, a female allegorical figure of justice stands holding wreaths symbolic of honor and reward. She is flanked by five figures of African American military personnel from each branch of the armed service. A dedication is inscribed into the memorial's granite pedestal which is adorned with a wreath. Erected after much controversy on Lansdowne Avenue, the memorial was moved in 1994 to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway opposite the Franklin Institute., Numbered 8419 on verso., Sheet number: 88L01., Divided back. World's Dispensary Medical Association. Proprietors of Dr. Pierce's family medicines. Buffalo, N.Y.
Letterhead containing a montage of images, including an exterior view of the dispensary factory, the company trademark, and pictorial details. Exterior view also shows street and pedestrian traffic, including horse-drawn carriages. Trademark shows Asclepius standing on a globe. Details include a palm leaf. Dr. Ray Pierce, a Buffalo eclectic medical doctor, had from the late 1860s been manufacturing patent medicines, such as Dr. Pierce’s smart weed and pleasant pellets. He organized a dispensary of “medical gentlemen” in 1873 and in 1878 opened The Invalids' and Tourists' Hotel in Buffalo for the treatment of chronic diseases. In 1879 he merged the Consulting Department of the World's Dispensary with the hotel, and established the World's Dispensary Medical Association., Stamped above image: Dr. Pierce's golden Medical Discovery. View showing the duplex direct-acting pump engine, designed by Henry R. Worthington, in the engine house at the Belmont Water Works at West River and Montgomery drives. The pumping station, designed by Frederick Graff in the late 1860s, supplied water to the 24th Ward Reservoir at George's Hill in Fairmount Park. The station was abandoned in 1895. Paper doll of an unclothed figure of a young Black girl with moveable limbs. The girl is depicted with short, cropped, tightly curled hair, auburn eyes, and slightly smiling. A blue-beaded string necklace adorns her neck. She also wears white, above-the-ankle length socks and black "Mary Jane" shoes. The articulated limbs are attached by brass brads to a white cardboard torso, likely not the original. About the late 1880s, Littauer & Boysen (established circa 1882), a premier German chromolithographer of novelties, began to print articulated dolls for the paper box company. Dennison sold the German firm's dolls to further market its special line of tissue/crepe paper as doll's clothing. The Massachusetts company, established 1844, also manufactured shipping tags, gummed labels, and holiday tags. The firm opened a salesroom in Philadelphia in 1862. In 1898, the firm consolidated operations in Framingham, Ma. from plants in Roxbury, Ma. Trade card for the small portable washing machine invented by George D. Ferris and marketed by Johnston Bros., "General Agents for the United States." Depicts two male fairies, one white and one African American, presenting a "Missouri Steam Washer. Pat'd. May 1, 1883" to a white woman who stands over a washboard in a wash tub. Steam rises from the tub filled with clothes. The African American fairy, portrayed in racist caricature with orange wings and attired in blue pants with suspenders, pushes in the metal washing machine on a dolly, while the other fairy points to it.
