Shows the bas-relief adorned base of the monument, completed in 1853 after the designs of architect Richard Upjohn, dedicated to former New York governor Clinton at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. The bas-relief represents Clinton's noted achievement of the Erie Canal and depicts construction of the canal by laborers, engineers, and horse-teams. Photomechanical reproduction of a mechanical drawing of a cross section of the pumping machinery for the waterworks, including the boiler and reservoirs, which when full were able to hold 17,660 gallons of water. Also includes smaller vignettes in the upper left and right corners showing the elevation and plan of the waterworks. The neo-classical style marble pump house was completed in 1800 after the designs of architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, in the tree-lined public square at High (Market) and Broad streets. The city's first waterworks delivered water from the Schuylkill River to subscribers and city hydrants until 1815, when superseded by the Fairmount Waterworks. Contains souvenir and memento postcards of the Sesquicentennial Exhibition, celebrating the 150th anniversary of independence in Philadelphia. Features general views of the fair grounds, including High Street, constructed to portray a Philadelphia street as it looked in 1776. Depicts exterior views of exhibition buildings erected for the fair, including several State buildings, buildings constructed on League Island, the large Liberty Bell replica marking the entrance of the fair, the Administration building, Palace of the Liberal Arts, Palace of Agriculture, Palace of Education, Palace of Fine Arts and Auditorium Convention Hall. African American caricature Franz Aman trade cards
Set of racist trade cards, some captioned, depicting African American male and female caricatures and stereotypes. Figures portrayed with malproportioned facial features. Captioned cards include "A New Coon in Town" showing an African American dandy, with a cigarette in his mouth, and attired in a grey bowler, purple jacket with flower boutonnière, red stiff-collared shirt, blue checkered pants, and red socks accessorized with yellow gloves, a monocle, and an umbrella; "Bones" showing an African American minstrel performer, attired in a ruffled clown collared shirt and red jacket with tails while playing sticks above his head and side kicking; and "Did you see me" showing a comic African American male figure, holding his bowler in the air and with one foot extended toward the viewer ("Did you see me" written on the sole of his foot). Uncaptioned cards depict an African American minstrel figure, attired in a ruffled collared shirt, seated, and holding a tambourine on his knee (probably originally captioned 'I don't do this for a livin"); an older African American woman, attired in a bonnet, shawl, and apron, resembling a cook and smoking a pipe (probably originally captioned "Just like the old me"); and a curvaceous African American woman attired in a red hat, square neck, knee-length dress, sash, and red stockings while side stepping. Cards advertise the saloon operated by Franz Aman at the address listed 1886-1888, a period when "Coon" songs were a fad.
