View of the hand-powered Philadelphia-style fire engine of the company that operated from Ridge Avenue above Wood Street in Spring Garden. A firefighter, in uniform, and holding a hose nozzle stands next to the engine. Engine contains double decker end-stroke hand pumpers and is adorned with ornamental details shaped as swans, and a panel decorated with a female figure and the maker plate "John Agnew, Philadelpa." A trumpet hangs from one of the pump levers. Also contains a border with geometric details. View from the floodgates, i.e. race bridge, looking toward the eastern side of the water works that were originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Shows several park visitors on the bridge who observe one another. Includes couples on promenade; a boy with a hoop; a woman watching two men converse about a sheet of paper; and a family whose daughters meekly peer at an African American couple. Two dogs bark in the direction of the African American woman who sits next to her companion who stands. Pedestrians stroll on the promenade of the mill house, swans glide on the water, and the gazebo on Reservoir Hill is visible. View looking south from the east bank of the Schuylkill River showing the Fairmount Water Works. Depicts the old engine house; old mill house; new mill house (completed 1862); and the observatory tower arch (built 1860), stand pipe (built 1852), and pavilion on Reservoir Hill. In the foreground, trees and bushes line the river bank and small boats sail near the Schuylkill Canal lock in which a barge travels. Also shows the Wire Suspension Bridge at Fairmount in the far right background. Four men and three women socialize. Three of the men wear suits and one, dressed in evening attire, sits in a chair. Two of the men hold top hats and all have chin beards. One woman wears an evening dress and the other two women are attired in day dresses and bonnets. One of the latter pair wears a shawl and the other holds a handkerchief. Scenes surrounded by a border designed as tree branches rising from tree stumps on which axes lay. Upper panel shows the parlor scene with 7 men, 2 women, a boy and a girl socializing. Most of the men wear suits, including two attired in striped pants, and the host wears an evening suit with white bow tie and tails. Four of the men wear or hold a top hat and a couple, arriving from the door, is attired in a suit and riding habit. The other woman, the hostess, at the center of the scene, flanked by her children, wears an evening dress with plunging neckline. Her two sons are attired in a hat, cape, tunic, and stockings and in a cap, jacket, and striped pants. Furnishings include a large display mirror, sofas, and drapery. Fountain in Franklin Square Philad.
View showing the working central marble fountain in the public square, originally known as the Northeast Square, laid out between Race, Vine, North Sixth, and North Franklin streets. Includes several well-dressed park visitors, including a woman with a child in a tram, strolling, in conversation, reading, seated on park stools, and feeding a squirrel. Also shows trees lining the plaza, a guard house, and partial views of buildings obstructed by the fountain in the background. Ornamental border surrounds the view. Built in 1837, the fountain was one of several improvements to the square following the relinquishment of the grounds by the German Reformed Church circa 1836. Square renamed in 1825. Advertisement showing the busy coal yard along the Schuylkill River. Yard workers haul cauldrons of coal by pulley and load and transport trucks on a multi-level wharf elevated above and surrounded by piles of coal. Franklin Iron Works, Franklin Str. between Second and Front sts. Kensington Philadelphia.
Advertisement for the iron foundry established at the 100 block of Franklin Street in 1841. Shows an exterior view of the foundry complex adorned with the company sign "Franklin Iron Works. J. T. Sutton & Co. Iron Foundry, Steam Engines, Boilers & Machinery Of All Descriptions." Cylinders, shafts, and wheels lay on the sidewalk in front of the building. Workers are visible at many of the numerous entranceways, hoisting, talking with company officers, and spotting machinery. At the corner, two gentlemen converse as a driver via a three-horse team cart transports a large cylinder in which he stands. Smoke rises from three smokestacks. Below the main image, a Corinthian frame for a steam engine adorned with the makers plate "J. T. Sutton & Co. Makers. Kensington. Phila" is depicted. Fire company certificate containing five vignettes bordered by patriotic and firefighting iconography. Vignettes depict the Fairmount Waterworks, including boys fishing on the canal lock; a circular industrial building, possibly the Spring Garden Water Works; company volunteers rushing hand pumps through Fairmount past Reservoir Hill; the station dog sleeping near the company steam engine in front of the firehouse on the 2200 block of Wood Street; and volunteers, surrounded by a crowd of spectators, fighting the fire at a large city building. Iconography includes helmets with the company number "25," fire hoses, trumpets, and belts as well as the American eagle holding the U.S. shield and flanked by flags over the company motto "Our Motto is Our Name, Always Ready for Public Good."
