Rock-a-horse, baby, and don't make a noise
A man sits and bounces a baby on his foot. The sender criticizes the recipient for not fighting in the Civil War and implies that his wife will cheat on him. The Rowdy.

A rum-casket has a human face that looks drunk. It reclines and holds a glass of rum. The border features a woman embracing a man; the pair resemble Commedia dell'arte characters. The Sail or Awning Maker.

Savage by nature, and savage by looks
The valentine shows a darkened man with facial hair, yellow legs that may be socks, and caucasian features. He wears a red loin cloth and carries a small ax. Both wear civilian clothing. A man stands in profile. The image is a caricature of an 1817 portrait of Thomas Hall by the British artist Richard Dighton. Hall was born in Philadelphia, but was ordained in England and served as the chaplain at the British factory in Leghorn (Livorno), Italy after the Napoleonic Wars.
