Strawberry Mansion postcards.
Contains views of Strawberry Mansion in Fairmount Park including the entrance stairway with a group of women and children; the drive and a partial view of the Strawberry Mansion trolley bridge; the fountain statue; the spring; the top of Strawberry Hill showing people picnicking and reclining on the green and several views of the mansion house. Judge William Lewis commissioned the mansion house, also known as Summerville, in 1789. In the 1820s Joseph Hemphill bought the property and added two wings to the house. His son Coleman grew strawberries from roots imported from Chile, giving the property its popular name, Strawberry Mansion. The house became a picnicking spot and restaurant in 1835. "Tippecanoe and Tyler too," was the cry they raised in forty two, when barrels were set up all over the land by the Enterprise Barrel Jack, Truck and Stand.
Trade card issued during the Columbian Exposition of 1893 advertising Enterprise Mf'g Co. of Pa. "Barrel Jack, Truck and Stand." Contains a scene showing the interior of a tavern in which the bar keep and customers raise pints of cider as a man delivers a barrel of it on an Enterprise barrel jack, truck and stand (i.e., dollie). A "Tippecanoe & Tyler Too" banner is displayed and bottles of liquor line the wall behind the bar. Another patron kneels in front of the bar and funnels cider from a barrel tipped on its side on a second dollie. Also contains a view of the Transportation Building designed by Adler & Sullivan. The exposition held in Chicago May 1-October 30, 1898 celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Depicts the train entrance for the Market Street subway near Front and Market Streets looking west, showing a train emerging from underground about to loop around a steep incline to continue along Delaware Avenue. Also depicts commercial store fronts on the south side of Market Street., Numbered 302 on verso., The Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (PRT) built the Market Street subway - elevated from 15th Street to 69th Street in 1907.
