- Advertisement containing an exterior view of the works at which laborers work on the grounds and in the many workshops. In the foreground, a laborer shovels coal from a long rectangular bin into one of two wheelbarrows. He works across from crates, a wheel, and other engine parts strewn on the ground. Behind him, workers inspect and haul large pieces of machinery by horse-drawn truck, in addition to push a wheelbarrow, and lead a horse-drawn cart in the direction of a large workshed in the background. Workers are visible toiling at stations inside through the open entry. In the right, other factory employees use a hoist to load a cylinder onto a docked sailing ship. - Event lithograph showing the gold and silver artificers of Philadelphia on procession past the Second Bank of the United States (420 Chestnut) for the centennial celebration of the birth of George Washington. Government officials and prominent citizens led the parade order, followed by the tradesmen, then the volunteer fire companies, and lastly the military. Shows the craftsmen, all attired in top hats and sashes, led by a parade marshall on horse-back. He is followed by a six-horse mounted team pulling a float carrying men operating and protecting a coin press. Two other men, probably the marshall's aids, on horseback, one on a rearing horse, flank the rear of the vehicle. Several rows of marching artisans follow the float led by an artificer carrying a large banner adorned with a bust portrait of Washington. The portrait is encircled by a wreath and bordered by an eagle that clasps a banner in his beak reading "Pater Patriae" [design on distributed coin]. Along the parade route, throngs of spectators watch from the steps of the bank, along the street, and from the second floor windows of businesses adjacent to the financial institution. Signage for "Thomas Fletcher, Manufacturer of Silver Plate and Jewelry"; "Fletcher & Gardiner"; and "Browne & Robb 132" adorn the storefronts. Merchandise is displayed in the windows of Fletcher & Gardiner. Spectators along the street include well-attired men, women, and children, including several boys who run to and gather in front of the float to retrieve freshly pressed coins being thrown from the vehicle. Many raise their arms and retrieve coins from the ground. - Fire company certificate containing a large central vignette of fire fighters with fire fighting vehicles in front of the State House in Philadelphia surrounded by six smaller vignettes depicting the company's three fire stations (dating 1804, 1848, and 1860); fire fighters battling blazes at T. Morris Perot's drug store (located on 600 block of Market Street, burned December 3, 1868) and at a block of rowhouses; and fire engines. Different era company firemen in uniform stand to either side of the central scene. - Fire company certificate containing vignettes depicting fire fighters extinguishing a blaze at the Union League of Philadelphia (burned September 7, 1866); the Good Will fire station; and a horse-drawn fire engine. Fire fighting equipment including a fire hat, a ladder, an axe, and other tools are drawn bundled together to form decorative elements on both sides. Pictorial elements are divided by a twisting fire hose. A company ambulance resting upon two intertwining American flags appears above the text., Not in Wainwright., Issued to William H. - Fire company certificate containing five vignettes bordered by patriotic and firefighting iconography. Vignettes depict the Fairmount Waterworks, including boys fishing on the canal lock; a circular industrial building, possibly the Spring Garden Water Works; company volunteers rushing hand pumps through Fairmount past Reservoir Hill; the station dog sleeping near the company steam engine in front of the firehouse on the 2200 block of Wood Street; and volunteers, surrounded by a crowd of spectators, fighting the fire at a large city building. Iconography includes helmets with the company number "25," fire hoses, trumpets, and belts as well as the American eagle holding the U.S. shield and flanked by flags over the company motto "Our Motto is Our Name, Always Ready for Public Good." - Advertisement showing the five-story offices and storefront known as the Girard Building (102-104, i.e., 306-308 Chestnut) tenanted by Goodyears, i.e., the Philadelphia warehouse of the New York Belting and Packing Company (104), "Peterson's Book Establishment," i.e., the store of publisher T.B. Peterson & Brothers, and C. J. Peterson, publisher of Peterson' Ladies national magazine (102). Lettering reading "Goodyears Rubber Packing & Belting Company" adorns the roof of the building. Through the open entryways and large display windows, clerks, patrons, and merchandise displays are visible in both stores. At Peterson's, clerks assist patrons with items from bookshelves surrounding the room in addition to a centrally located U-shaped display counter labeled "Peterson's Magazine." Stacks of books are displayed near the windows that contain promotions "Subscriptions for all Magazines" and "Chas. Dickens Complete Works." At Goodyears, a white man clerk stands at a counter in front of rows of shelves as he attends to a customer. Other patrons, including a white man and woman couple and a white man, converse and depart with rubber belting. A large model boot, shoes, and rubber toys adorn the display windows that are adorned with the company trademark and read "Goodyears Patent." A white man with a cane and an excited white boy, near his mother, peer at the displays from the busy sidewalk., Other activity, on opposite ends of the sidewalk, includes a white man paying a white newsboy for a paper, gentlemen in conversation, and a white man, a book under his arm, strolling by. Between the storefronts, a white man descends stairs within a central entryway. In the street, a coach with turned-down roof, occupied by a white lady, and driven by an African American coachman travels past a mounted First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary member in full regalia in the direction of a drayman. The white man laborer transports rubber belting on his horse-drawn dray. Two dogs greet each other in the street near his vehicle. Also shows shadowy figures, a man and two women, in upper floor windows of the buildings. Charles Goodyear patented the process to vulcanize rubber in 1844 and oversaw the factory where vulcanized rubber was practically manufactured at Newtown, Connecticut. Peterson established his magazine Peterson's Ladies national magazine in 1840 at 102, i.e., 306 Chestnut Street. Both establishments operated at the pre-consolidated address in 1856. - Tradecard containing a view of the three-and-one-half story beer hall and restaurant adorned with signage reading "G. Hartung Hotel." A patron enters the establishment as a man, probably the proprietor, stands near the entrance. A laborer emerges from the cellar holding a keg. Kegs and a case of liquor bottles line the sidewalk near a horse-drawn dray situated in the street for loading. - Membership certificate containing a border comprised of vignettes, filigree, and other pictorial details. Vignettes depict "Love for your members in sickness & in health" showing a sick bed scene; "Purity of Heart & Life" showing an allegorical scene with a woman dressed in white standing in the forest near a lake and fountain; "Fidelity to your solemn obligations" portraying a scene of a member taking his oath in a parlor; and a scene of a man sitting in bed and reading. - Grand lodge room of the new Masonic Hall, Chestnut Street Philadelphia.
- Commemorative print showing the ornately decorated grand lodge room on the second floor of the New Masonic Hall built 1853-1855 after the designs of Sloan & Stewart at 713-721 Chestnut Street. Rows of cushioned benches with carved backs line the room adorned with gold vaulting over the turquoise colored walls and ceiling. Two daises with lavish thrones adorned with ornate Gothic-style canopies containing sculpted allegorical female figures interrupt the seating. The larger dais, which predominates the background and over which a large gilt chandelier hangs, contains several Gothic-style chairs, two chests, and sculpture displayed on pedestals and in alcoves. The smaller dais, including a chest, stands in the right of the image. - Advertisement containing a gothic-style ornamental border surrounding text providing the date of the ball, names of sponsors, ticket information, and entertainment details. Border includes vignettes of cherubs; allegorical figures representing the arts including painting, sculpture, and music; a portrait of George Washington; a mythical scene; and a view. Scene shows a bare-chested woman on a horse being attacked by a tiger surrounded by symbols of industry, science, and the humanities. View shows a seventeenth-century landing party aboard a skiff. Sponsors include Alexander Henry, Commodore C.J. Pendegrast, and Capt. W.S. Ogden. - Membership certificate for the African American fraternal organization containing an allegorical view that includes Odd Fellow iconography. Shows the female figures of Justice and Truth standing on globes and flanking a framed view of an ark at sea. Justice holds a sword and scale and Truth holds a torch, serpent, and a mirror from which a light shines. Visible within and bordering the view are Odd Fellow symbols, including the sickle and hourglass, dove, skull and crossbones, the lamb, heart-in-hand, and the lion. Above the view the female figure Charity sits and holds children in her lap below the all Seeing Eye in the night sky under a rainbow marked "G.U.O. of O.F." - Periodical illustration of a genre scene showing an elderly man watching over his toddling grandchild inside a cottage. The man sits on a bench next to a tankard and blankets. The grandchild wearing a dress and bonnet uses a chair as a balance. Scene also includes a sleeping dog, tools hanging on the wall and resting on the floor, and a plant displayed on a window sill. Lithotint was a lithographic process using different strengths of ink applied to the printing stone to create the appearance of a watercolor. - Collection of 5 chromolithograph puzzle blocks and 5 duplicate unmounted, uncut chromolithographs showing prominent buildings at the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 during different times of the day and weather conditions. Buildings include the Art Gallery, Machinery Hall, Horticultural Hall, Agricultural Hall, and the Main Building. Views include heavy pedestrian traffic, visitors traveling the grounds by carriage, fountains, statuary, and variant skyscapes. Main Building view also shows a troop of marching soldiers and several street cars, including a "Fairmount Park" vehicle. Majority of the buildings were built after the designs of Herman Schwartzmann, Henry Pettit and Joseph M. Wilson. - Certificate of appreciation for work with the "Committee on the Restaurant of the Great Central Fair" containing a border of scenes and vignettes depicting the presence of the Sanitary Commission at the battlefront. Shows commission supply wagons arriving and depositing crates of goods at a campsite; soldiers assisting other soldiers in walking, receiving refreshments, and being transported by a gurney; and an unloaded crate of bottles of beverages, oranges, tins, and bandages. Also contains the seal of "The Great Central Fair for the U.S. Sanitary Commission." - The great conflagration in Philadelphia on Tuesday July 9th 1850.
- Disaster scene showing the commotion in front of the partially destroyed stores of John Brock & Co., and Gordon and Berger at 39 (i.e., 100 block) North Water Street. People hold a crowd back as fire fighters attend to the collapsing building spewing a cloud of smoke. A family, including a mother and child, flee past fire fighters rushing to a fallen comrade as debris falls down upon them. Also shows a man kneeling near the Vine Street Wharf as another stands in the center of the view with his arms up in the air. The explosion emanated from a fire started by the friction of a hoisting-machine igniting a large store of gunpowder and saltpeter in the Brock, and Gordon and Berger building. The blaze that spread about one square mile between Front and Callowhill streets destroyed actually about 367 houses and stores. - Advertisement containing a view of the busy fertilizer factory complex on the riverfront in Wilmington, Delaware. Complex includes three smock stacks. Several workers move, inspect, and use handcarts near rows of crates piled on the dock and in front of the manufactory. Horse-drawn wagons arrive and depart from the site. Ships and barges deliver and receive supplies from the Christina River. Also contains notice about "Descriptive Pamphlets mailed free on application" and the three locations of the manufacturers, including 203 West Front Street, Wilmington, Del.; 57 South Calvert Street, Baltimore, Md.; 28 South Wharves, Philadelphia. - Eight-page foldout advertisement for George Gill Green's "August Flower" and "Boschee's German Syrup" containing advertising text pages and five views of Fairmount Park including the Fairmount Water Works and Resevoir, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff. Also shows horse-drawn carriages pulling men and women racing north on East River Drive under the New York Connecting Railway Bridge, built 1866-67 after designs by Joseph A. Wilson for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Promontory Rock Tunnel, bored in 1871, is visible in the background. Other images include people leisurely rowing on a creek under the bridge to Lansdown Island; park visitors standing on a pathway that overlooks the Schuylkill River from the Fairmount Water Works; and men and women strolling, sitting, and traveling in horse-drawn carriages along Wissahickon Drive. Paragraphs of advertising text promote George Gill Green's "August Flower" as a "natural cathartic" that "corrects the acidity of the stomach," and "it is established fact in every town and village on this continent, that [Boschee's] German Syrup is the only remedy that has given satisfaction in severe cases of Lung Disease." - View of the active business block containing and named after Grigg, Elliot, & Co., the largest and most prosperous publishing firm in the city that was founded by John Grigg in 1823 and purchased by J. B. Lippincott in 1849. Shows the block of buildings (10-20 North Fourth Street) covered in signage and including Barcroft, Beaver & Co., dry good dealers and S. M. Day, wholesale combs, brush and fancy goods trimmings (10); Goff & Peterson, importers and manufacturers of saddlery, carriage, and harness trimmings (12); Grigg, Elliot & Co. (14); C. H. & Geo. Abbott, dealers and importers of hardware and cutlery and C. Ahrenfeldt & Co., importers of toys & fancy goods (16); C. B. Lassell & Co., hats and caps and Charles Wingate, dealer in shoes, boots, and palm leaf hats (18); and Edwin & John Tams, importers and dealers of china, earthenware, and glass (20). Patrons exit and enter the various storefronts; delivery men, including an African American man, haul, load, and remove goods from horse-drawn and push carts; laborers load goods into shop storage cellars and use a pulley to raise a large cask; store clerks inspect and open newly arrived packages on the sidewalk; a horse-drawn dust settling machine passes in the street; and artisans and merchandise are visible in several of the shops' upper floor windows.
