Description
View looking southwest from Reed Street near Passyunk Avenue of the prison complex, including the central two-story octagonal battlemented tower and Egyptian-style debtor's wing, constructed 1832-1835 after designs by Thomas Ustick Walter. A woman walks on the sidewalk in front of the iron gate in the foreground. The prison, also known as Philadelphia County Prison, operated under a system of solitary confinement. Demolished in 1968.
