Description
View showing Grand Army of the Republic members marching in front of a reviewing stand where President McKinley is seated under a canopy observing the spectacle during the National Encampment held in Philadelphia September 5-6, 1899. The stands, situated in front of City Hall, are adorned in patriotic bunting. Two large decorative "welcome" columns flank the president's box and contain the names of various armies. The Grand Army of the Republic, a society of Union veterans was organized in 1866 to promote fraternity, charity, and loyalty among its members, including camp fires, encampments, the establishment of veteran relief funds, and the preservation of civil war sites and financing of memorials. A National Encampment was held every year from 1866 to 1949.
