View looking south from the west bank of the Schuylkill River near the Schuylkill Navigation Company Canal and locks showing
the Wire Bridge at Fairmount. The bridge, the first suspension bridge in the United States, was built from 1841-1842 after
the designs of engineer Charles Ellet, Jr. It was razed in 1874. View includes a team of horses and a horse-drawn wagon on
the riverbank in front of the canal locks near the house built in 1833 for Schuylkill Navigation Company officials. Also shows
factories adjacent to the bridge in the background.
