Description
View looking northwest from the west base of the old mill house at the Fairmount Water Works on the Schuylkill River. Shows the new mill house constructed between 1859-1862 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Henry P.M. Birkinbine. Also shows men standing on the roof terrace and in a window balcony of the building. The waterworks, originally built between 1812 and 1822 after the designs of Philadelphia engineer Frederick Graff, were altered and expanded until 1872.
