Description
View of the commercial street, above Eighth Street, south side. Businesses include: John Wanamaker & Co. luxury clothing store (established 1869) at 818 Chestnut Street; publishers and booksellers Porter & Coates (1867-1895) at 822 Chestnut Street; and the Continental Hotel (completed 1860 after designs of John McArthur, Jr.) at the corner of Ninth and Chestnut streets. Mannequins stand in front of the doorway of the Wanamaker store.
