Arcadia caption text: Not many interior photographic views of markets exist because the congestion and hectic environment
of these public venues made taking photographs impractical for 19th-century photographers. This rare c. 1885 view shows George
Stockburger’s butcher stall at the Headhouse Market at Second and Pine streets. The meat hanging from hooks on the side of
the stall and displayed on uncovered counters and a table reflect the sanitary standards of the 19th century.
