Description |
Three-quarter length portrait of George Barrell Cheever, the radical abolitionist preacher and author. Cheever, attired in
a white collared shirt, a black waistcoat, jacket, and pants, stands looking slightly right and holds a walking stick in his
right hand. His book, "The Guilt of slavery and crime of slaveholding: demonstrated from the Greek and Hebrew scriptures,"
argued that the Bible categorically denounced slavery.
