Description Full-length portrait of the acclaimed girl emancipated from enslavement. Freed in Virginia by military nurse Catherine S. Lawrence, Fannie was publicized as the "redeemed slave child" baptized by Henry Ward Beecher at age five at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn in May 1863. Depicts Lawrence, dressed in a fancy hat and cape, leaning against a balustrade.
