Description |
Three-quarter length portrait of five-year old child emancipated from enslavement, Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence, with
her adoptive mother Catherine S. Lawrence. Freed in Virginia by Lawrence, a military nurse, Fannie was publicized as the "redeemed
slave child" baptized by Henry Ward Beecher at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn in May 1863. Depicts the fair-skinned Fannie, attired
in a straw hat, a cape, and a dress, standing and holding the gloved hand of the seated Catherine Lawrence, attired in a bonnet
with a black lace veil and a bow under her chin, a dark-colored dress, and a cape.
