Two African American agricultural workers, a boy carrying hay and a man carrying a sack, stand on the dirt road with their backs to the viewer and look on at the cart. A church, pastures, and a mountain range are seen in the background.

The Photographic Society of Philadelphia, founded in 1862, by Charles Guillou, was one of the earliest existing amateur photography clubs in the world. The Society held annual exhibitions where the members competed for best portrait and landscape.
