Group portrait of a crowd of hundreds of promenaders crammed on the Atlantic City boardwalk during the Lenten season of the early 1920s. All the promenaders are attired in hats and their holiday best, including an elegant African American woman. The Schlitz Hotel, the Hotel Dunlop, the Steel Pier, and the Atlantic Ocean are seen in the background. Spectators look down from the balcony at the Schlitz Hotel. Starting in the late 19th century, Atlantic City became a haven for the well-to-do to celebrate Easter and model their fashionable holiday wear and millinery.
