Bust-length portrait of Brooklyn preacher and abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher, attired in a white collared shirt, a black tie, a waistcoat with a pocket watch chain, and a jacket. He faces forward and looks at the viewer.

Biographical / historical note
Buttre, a prolific New York portrait painter and engraver, published later in his career in 1877, "American portrait gallery," a three-volume set of celebrity portraiture which was reissued from 1880-1881.
