Description |
Full-length portrait after the painting by New York historical painter, Alonzo Chappel, of the prominent Brooklyn preacher
and abolitionist. Beecher, attired in a white collared shirt, a black bowtie, jacket, pants, and shoes, sits on a chaise lounge
with his legs crossed holding an open book. His left hand touching his face as though he is deep in thought. More books rest
on the chaise lounge and on a side table in the right.

Chappel painted a majority of the portraits published as engravings in biographer Evert Duyckinck's, "Portrait Galleries,"
of the 1860s and 1870s. He often copied the subjects' faces from photographic portraits and placed them on generic bodies
that he situated in more decorative surroundings than the original photograph.
