Description |
Bust-length portrait of the respected Philadelphia African American caterer, proprietor of the Blue Bell Tavern, and member
of Frank Johnson's band. One of several variant reproductions of the only known portrait of Bogle, possibly a study sketch
for a print to accompany Philadelphia antiquarian Dreer's private printing in 1865 of Nicholas Biddle's 1830 poem, "Ode To
Bogle," originally written in 1830. Bogle, attired in a white collared shirt, a white bowtie, and a brown jacket with a black
collar, faces slightly left.
