Description
View showing the African American 24th Regiment standing in ranks at Camp William Penn, Cheltenham Township. Two white officers stand in front of the regiment gathered next to the camp's barracks. Begun in 1863 with the support of the Union League, Camp William Penn was the first Pennsylvania camp for volunteer African American regiments. Eleven regiments were formed at the camp, including the 24th. Camp William Penn was the largest existing camp for the training of officers to lead African American troops.
