Description |
Exterior view of the University's twin buildings, Medical Hall and College Hall, located on the west side of 9th Street between
Market and Chestnut Streets. Designed by Philadelphia architect William Strickland and constructed 1829-1830, the buildings
housed the University until its removal to West Philadelphia in the 1870s. View includes a group of students gathered in a
doorway, and several pedestrians including two women carrying parasols.

Originally issued as plate 15 in Views of Philadelphia, and Its Vicinity (Philadelphia: Published by J.C. Wild & J.B. Chevalier,
Lithographers, 72 Dock Street, 1838). The lithographic stones for the views were acquired by John T. Bowen and reissued in
1838 and in 1848 with hand coloring.
