John Markoe was the son of Abraham Markoe and his second wife, Elizabeth Baynton. John married Mehitabel (Hitty) Cox in 1804
and succeeded his father as head of extensive business interests in Philadelphia. About 1810 a mansion was built for the Markoes
designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe and supervised by Robert Mills, on Chestnut St. between 9th and 10th.
