Description
Certificate, containing an allegorical scene, issued in recognition of the military service of Pennsylvania volunteers during the Civil War. Shows the female allegorical figure of Columbia (i.e., United States), her head covered by the American flag, holding laurel wreaths and the Constitution in her outstretched hands, as she stands over a woman huddled on the ground with her children. To the left, a soldier, holding a rifle, stands on his guard, in front of them, while at his feet lay the ruins of a cannon. In the background, Independence Hall, cityscape, and the masts of ships are visible. Also includes a gold border with ornamental details, American eagles, and a variation of the Pennsylvania state seal.
