Description
Proof before letters containing a view looking east on Chestnut Street between 4th and 5th Streets depicting two banks designed by Philadelphia architect William Strickland: the United States Bank of Pennsylvania, formerly the Bank of the United States (i.e. Second Bank, later U.S. Custom House 1844-1935), constructed 1818-24; and the Philadelphia Bank, completed in 1837. Contains a partial view of buildings on the north side of the street including the entranceway of the United States Hotel. Also shows horse-drawn carriages travelling west and a dray and a man pushing a wheelbarrow travelling east in the street. Pedestrians walk on the sidewalk and on the steps of the United States Bank and convene at the hotel entrance.
