Description
Exterior view of the Blockley Alms House on the Schuylkill River from eastern bank including the Market Street Bridge, Beck's shot tower, and a distant view of Eastern State Penitentiary. Almshouse, designed by Philadelphia architect William Strickland, was constructed in 1833.

Issued as plate 8 in Views of Philadelphia, and Its Vicinity. (Philadelphia: Published by J.C. Wild & J.B. Chevalier, Lithographers, 72 Dock Street, 1838), a series of views originally published as five numbers of four prints each in 1838, and later sold as a bound volume of twenty views.
