View looking east down the inclined plane cut into Belmont Hill (Fairmount Park) for the hauling of railroad cars in Philadelphia
on route to the steam locomotives to Columbia on the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad. Shows two men watching cars being
hauled by ropes from within the plane. The covered Columbia Railroad Bridge, completed in 1834 over the Schuylkill River,
from which the plane leads up, is visible in the background. Also shows distant cityscape, and forestry. The plane was abandoned
in 1850.

Originally published as plate 4 in Views of Philadelphia, and its vicinity (Philadelphia: Published by J.C. Wild & J.B. Chevalier,
Lithographers, 72 Dock Street, 1838). The lithographic stones for the views were acquired by John T. Bowen and reissued in
1838 and in 1848 with hand coloring.
