Description
View showing an unexecuted monument commissioned by the citizen's group National Commemoration Monument Association and designed by sculptor William Wetmore Story for the re-landscaping of the square for the Centennial celebration of 1876. Shows the figure of Liberty standing upon a column adorned with female allegorical figures; an eagle encircled by stars; fearsome animal heads; and floral ornaments. The monument was to be placed in the center of the square at the intersection of the main paths. In 1876, the committee asked to and was allowed to be released from a city ordinance, passed in March 1875, that required them to raise $50,000 for the erection of the monument and the project effort apparently dissolved.
