Description
View showing the "Chemicals, Powers & Weightman, Philadelphia" exhibit booth at the Centennial Exhibition that celebrated the centennial of the United States through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art. Exhibit contains numerous bell jars, glass canisters, and display cases of minerals including alum, blue vitriol, acetate, and opium. Booth adorned with Victorian ornamental details, the name of the exhibitor, and the firm's establishment date of 1818. Also shows exhibition visitors entering, admiring, walking past, and leaning on the booth. In 1847, Powers & Weightman succeeded Farr & Kunzi (established in 1818), and became internationally renown for their manufacture of medicinal and other fine chemicals. The company was the first to introduce quinine to the United states.
