Description
First state of a bird's eye view issued as a promotion by the publisher for "The Illustrated History of the Centennial Exhibition" (1876). View looks south from Belmont Plateau showing the proposed buildings on the exhibition grounds in West Fairmount Park. Includes Horticultural Hall, Main Exhibition Building, Memorial Hall, Agricultural Hall, Judges Hall, Ladies Pavilion, Machinery Hall, and U.S. Government Building. The grounds are lined with trees, bushes, and landscaped paths. Includes several fair visitors traveling by foot and carriage on the paths. Clusters of tree tops are visible in the foreground. Also contains the names and dimensions of the main buildings printed below the image. The Centennial Exhibition celebrated the anniversary of the United States through an international exhibition of industry, agriculture, and art.
