Description
View of the first gristmill in Philadelphia built in 1683 by Richard Townsend in Germantown at Church and Wingohocking streets. Named for its early 19th-century owner, Hugh Roberts, the mill was razed in 1873. Shows the wheelhouse, waterfall, and mill race of the mill.

Hart originally issued a series of prints of Germantown between 1863 and 1888, several of which were published as John Richards' Quaint old Germantown in Pennsylvania. A series of sixty former landmarks of Germantown and vicinity... Collated, arranged and annotated by Julius Friedrich Sachse (Philadelphia, 1913), Pl. LI. Caption in publication reads: Roberts Mill on the north side of Church Lane, east of Stenton Avenue, built 1683. Removed about 1873. The second mill in Philadelphia county built (the year when Germantown was laid out) by Richard Townsend.
