Notes Round about this structure, lined up boldly beside the solemn old home of the Academy of Natural Sciences, soldiery camped, barracked and drilled in Civil War days. Broad street, in front, was but little more than a cobble strewn freight yard where, also, market wagons were parked at nightfall. Then, in 1864, the Union League cleared the ground for its new building, which was completed and occupied in may, 1865, just in time to fittingly celebrate the triumphant close of the great war which led to the formation, in 1863, of this patriotic body of citizens.
