Notes |
This long and notable hotel was displaced in 1924 to make room for a modern business structure. It catered to the travelling
public through more than sixty years of service. When opened it ranked as one of the four most notable hotels of the nation.
The first proprietors were the Kingsleys. The house contained 450 rooms and was conducted upon the "American plan" of a definite
daily charge. Its location was due to the burning of the "circus," which had long occupied the site; an event which changed
the plans of the Butler Hotel Company, which had intended to build upon the nortwest corner of Chestnut and Eighth Streets.
The Continental had the largest bar in the United States.
