         | Notes | The La Pierre House, built in 1853, stood upon part of the site now covered by the Land Title Building. It was opened by
the Edward brothers, who had the preceding year also completed the Girard House. The La Pierre was enlarged by an addition
extending to Chestnut street and the old building of the Academy of Natural Sciences was annexed as a dormitory. In its earlier
years, prior to the opening of the Continental hotel, in 1860, it ranked as the leading hotel of the city. For a considerable
period prior to its disappearance it was called "The Lafayette." |
