Francis McClain, son of master carpenter Hugh McClain, born ca. 1838 in Pennsylvania, worked as a lithographer in Philadelphia
in 1860. McClain resided with his parents and siblings in South Philadelphia (2nd Ward). His father owned real estate valued
at $3000 and personal estate valued at $1000.

By 1866 McClain entered the carpentry trade and continued to live with his family at a residence at 1012 Christian Street. |
